Dear Selfless Donor,

My name is Carol and I am a college grad facing extremely difficult times. Like many others, I have not been guaranteed success and steady employment after college. After living with my parents and endlessly floating from minimum wage job to another in a small rural town with no opportunities, I decided to take control of my life, take a risk, and move back to Philadelphia for more opportunities. I have finally landed a wonderful, amazing job in my field of marketing, but I just started so I won't be getting a paycheck for a few weeks, and I have no money left and nothing else to sell. I need to pay rent in order to continue on with my newfound career, and I am drowning in debt. I have over a hundred grand in student loan debt and am about to default; both of my bank accounts are negative several hundred dollars due to fees and returned payments from not having the funds; I also have credit card debt from having to resort to using only plastic due to lack of money to pay for things like transportation, food, and other bills like my cell phone, which is the most basic prepaid phone and plan possible. I am overwhelmed and my stress and worry level is so high, it interferes with my health, social life, and keeps me from being able to focus in my new work completely. I have panic attacks, nervous breakdowns, and crying fits daily and I have exhausted all options aside from anything immoral and illegal and have borrowed all the money I could. I hope that a generous person could give me the help that I desperately need and once I am back on my feet I would love to pay it forward to someone else who needs it because I know how it feels. I never liked asking for help, but there comes a time when we all have to at some point ask for help on something. I fell on hard times recently and I was evicted from my apartment about 6 months ago. My job doesnt pay me a lot so I am struggling to keep up with my car note, cell phone, insurance, maintenance, and general daily and weekly expenses. I nearly got my car reposessed 5 months ago and I've been staying at my ex-mother in law's house and my girlfriend's place off and on so I am not sleeping in my car. Most would think you could live with your girlfriend, but she wants me there it's her grandmother who's making life hard for the both of us right now. All I think about is the kind words my girlfriend tells me and what little she can do to help me and the most selfless thing she did recently was she gave me her last $20 for lunch and gas just so I could get to work that week and deep down many days I sit in my car before work and cry because nobody has ever been that giving to sacrifice her own needs to help me out. I want to marry this woman she's been nothing, but good to me and I feel bad that I can't do anything for her because I have nothing to give her which hurts me as a man because all I want is to make a life for myself and for the woman I love very much. I want to get in school to be a mechanic since I like working on cars and want to fix them. I want to give my girlfriend a proper life with me as her husband and being able to support her the way a man should support his woman. I love going to work every day as a child and family therapist knowing that I have the ability to help make positive changes in others’ lives. I also, for whatever reason, feel very uncomfortable asking for help. I don’t think I have ever asked anyone for financial help in my life, let alone a “donation”. I was always taught that if you want something…. YOU WORK FOR IT! I have had a job since I was 13 yrs old and it taught me to appreciate the value of the dollar and hard work. But what happens when you physically can’t? My values speak to who I was, who I am and who I want to be and why I am worthy of your help.

Resilient for many years –struggling through a childhood of undiagnosed ADHD - low self esteem, disruptive and impulsive behaviors, poor attention, disorganization, ambivalence about making life decisions, flunking out of college my freshman yr at 18 yo (which led to me having to pay any subsequent schooling on my own), moving and attending a new school at the beginning of my 8th grade year with a scoliosis brace that had to be worn 23 hours a day, having major surgery at 14 yo and missing 3 months of my freshman yr. As an adult, moving from NJ to Ma away from my family who I was extremely close to due to a marriage that didn’t work, losing my father to cancer and watching him waste away in front of me and feeling helpless. I did return to school as an adult committed to helping others and figuring out my own insecurities. Over 7 yrs (25-32 yrs old) received my bachelors degree from Rutgers University with high honors and my masters in clinical social work from Columbia University also with honors.
I know what I am capable of and I know how much I have to give to others. But at this point in my life, I also need to be honest with myself about my physical limitations.
When I was 12 yo I was diagnosed with a severe case of scoliosis and had to wear a body brace for 1 ½ yrs. Bad timing, I guess… I had just moved and was starting my 8th grade yr in a new school. Two yrs later (1983) I had major reconstructive surgery (14 hours, in a body cast 6 mos, couldn’t ride in a car or sit for more than 15 mins a day for 3 mos) and my spine was fused from T3 to L4 – all at 14 yo! Over the years, my back problems were just “part of my life”. Now at 43 I am disabled and in need of another major surgery due to collapsed discs that are compressing the nerves in my lower back. The pain I endure is affecting my ability to sit, stand or walk to any period of time. I had to leave my last job as an outpatient therapist a couple of years ago due to my inability to commit to a schedule because of my pain. I have been taking pain pills, which I do not want to become addicted to and have worked out an arrangement with a caring chiropractor. Not to mention at work I have kids, teens and their families who depend on me to help them, some of who I don’t charge because they can’t afford it. So, my schedule is minimal, my bills are racking up and I continue to try to help people sometimes at my own expense (physical). I have no health insurance because I can’t afford it, I live in a 800 square foot apartment that I share and I drive a 1998 Nissan Maxima that has over 200,000 miles on it! I don’t have “things” because I don’t NEED material things. It kills me to ask for help, especially monetary. It’s hard for me to accept help but I have no problem giving, lending or helping other people. My friends say that I give “too much”, but I feel that if I have it to give or I can do something to help someone else be happier, less stressed or more comfortable than I will. And I’ve been taken advantage of many times because of this – for example, 3 yrs ago, I lent a co-worker $5000 to assure that as a single mother she would have a dependable car for her and her 3 kids. She has not paid me anything yet. Gave another friend my car for 2 weeks to use because her car was in the shop and she couldn’t afford a rental. It was definitely an inconvenience, having to walk to and from work a mile, having to way to run errands until the weekend, etc. But I did it because I knew how much it meant to her and how much it helped. I then find myself thinking … who will be my angel when I need one?? And I do…. Please, please help!! I don’t have a choice right now. I am a 32 year old working mom of three beautiful children and I have the most wonderful husband anyone could ask for. We have the perfect mid-west life. We both work full time (and enjoy what we do), have a nice home, we're able to afford some luxuries in life although in moderation, that is enough for me. I enjoy cooking, and entertaining in my time off from work, and spending family time with my kids, parents, and neighbors. My children are Jordon (age 13), Logan (age 10), and Brianna (age 9). The kids are active in sports, and in our small community we are well known, and frequently can be seen volunteering at community events, church, and our local high school, of which we are both alumni. I live less than two miles from the home I grew up in. Sounds perfect if you ask me.

On February 18th, 2011 our son Logan (age 10) was diagnosed with a large brain tumor. He was not having many symptoms only occasional headaches. I was concerned that he may have been developing migraines and so I took him to see our family physician. His physical exam was normal including a rather thorough neurological exam. Dr. Arntz agreed with my initial thought and prescribed him some migraine medication. What a relief! He asked us to get a CT scan of Logan's head only as a precaution and he even stated that he didn't think there was any real concern, just a precaution. 5 days later, we were heading to the University of Michigan; Mott's childrens hospital because his precautionary CT scan had confirmed the worst for us. A 6 cm brain tumor in the posterior fossa of Logan's brain. Causing the cerebral spinal fluid to back up and create pressure in his head (hence the headaches).

Before leaving the house for the hospital we gave Logan a brief description of the problem, and explained to him that we didn't know what was going to happen next but we were going to the hospital to find out. You could see the worry on him but he was tough, shrugged his shoulders and said, "Well, I guess I better call it something, I think I'll name it Steve." So off we went, notifying family on the way to the hospital, and completely sick to my stomach.

Three days later we would embark on the scariest days of my life. Logan was promptly scheduled for surgery the following Monday and we were told there was a high probability that the tumor was cancerous. Dr. Cormac Maher performed 14 hours of brain surgery on Logan on Monday February 21st, and confirmed our fears that Logan indeed had a cancerous brain tumor called medulloblastoma. Then more bad news the post operative MRI showed that they had been able to remove all of the tumor and Logan would need more surgery. The next day he underwent another 6 hours of brain surgery. We caught it early but based on where the tumor sat he may not be able to talk or walk normally for 3-6 months. Lucky for us he talks and walks very well all things considered. But there has been radiation therapy and chemo therapy will continue until February or March of next year. There is a 75-80% chance of survivability, I feel blessed with those odds.

Logan is doing very well but this situation has put an incredible financial burden on us. I am falling behind on bills and need help. Andy is working constantly and I even started a second job on the weekends to try to help supplement the lost income from prescriptions, gas to and from the hospital, and just having to take time off work for appointments and Logan's sick days... I don't know what else to do. The banks have tried thankfully to work with us but our circumstance is not going to change for quite awhile longer. Our family's do not have a lot of money, and have already tried to help so much that I think it may be putting a strain on them as well. The church sends gas cards occasionally but there is just not enough to keep us going for the next year.

Here' s the kicker, Logan started his own Relay for Life team. I had taken him to a local expo about 3 weeks after he had been discharged from the hospital because I thought it would be good exercise for him to walk around and there would be lot's to look at, and there was a booth for the American Cancer Society. He walked up to the lady at the booth and he said " How old do you have to be to have a team?" She signed him up on the spot. Logan Bailey's Super Survivors have raised $8300.00 for the American Cancer Society! He's only a little more than $1600.00 away from his goal of raising $10000.00 for the Relay for Life. We've held auctions, bake sales, and concerts. It's been a wonderful distraction for him and he is super excited about reaching that fund-raising goal. We have asked our friends to contribute to his goals in lieu of giving us personal financial assistance. It's more important to me that his endeavors to do more for others, are successful.

We cannot change Logan's circumstance. He will always be a brain cancer survivor, and I will forever be a medullo-mom. But, if we can make this even minutely easier for others having to face it after us then we will do it. Logan donated "Steve the brain tumor" to medical research and he volunteered to participate in a medical research trial for his treatments. We hope that the money raised for the American Cancer Society will make a difference in research and support for anyone suffering with a cancer diagnosis. We hope that the research will make the work of wonderful, selfless, people like Dr. Maher and his team easier and more successful. If I had been diagnosed with this same type of cancer at the age of ten it would have been a terminal diagnosis... the research is working!!

Hi there. I am a 31 year old male British male and my girlfriend of 10 years left 4 months ago. I have been left heart broken and homeless. When we met all them years back her Dad was beating her up and seeing the bruises got to much for me. Her sadness was unbearable so I moved her into my parents house and gave up my college course so we could afford our own place. The plan was to help her feel good again and set her free. or fall in love and live happy ever after. Her mum died from aids and It was only after she moved in that she told me she was illegal in the country and from Zimbabwe. With no id and no hope of a job I worked rubbish jobs to pay the bills untill she became so depressed I had to give up work and look after her. 2 people lived on one poor wage and on/off government benefits. We had so so much love that its heart breaking its gone. After finally being told our immigration case failed 2 years ago we put in various appeals until we were told we had no choice but to leave. Then came the answer to a load of prayers and we found a lawyer and they said they could help us stay in the UK. Sadly my ex was finding life very hard again and felt suicidal. I tried to pick her up and help her see the positive and she turned to Buddhism to get her through the day. After a few visits to the Buddhist centre she left me. SO SO SO NEAR THE END OF A TEN YEAR NIGHTMARE. She thanked me for loving her and told me I had the biggest heart of anyone she had met..she told me she would die for me. I dont know what went wrong but she said I was better off without her. I swear along with a mental breakdown this Buddhist group some call cultish have ruined her mind and life. My part in her immigration case and the good case we had was ended by her and for one reason or another all contact has been severed and though her last email said life without me is unbearable I am not allowed to go near the Buddhist centre she lives at and they had me arrested so in affect I cannot contact my ex. We ended 4 months ago and the flat was so empty and the stress so bad I gave EVERY SINGLE THING TO CHARITY AND HAD ME A BIT OF A BREAKDOWN. From 21 years old until that day I remained strong and gave her my everything. And now this. Nothing left. She rang me a months ago telling me she started a new case and is feeling suicidal..YET MARRYING A BUDDHIST GUY SHE MET..thats the last I have heard and I am heart broken homeless and scared for her. I need to raise money for anything really. So I can afford a bus pass to look for and maintain work. So I can give a bit of money to the very few friends I have to help me keep a roof over my head. We are always looking for the best way we can help these helpless animals.

After some excited brainstorming we came up with the idea to open our own not for profit rescue. Hence the name “Kandi Boo Rescue” came about.

Please allow me to offer some background into what inspired us to open Kandi Boo Animal Rescue.

We were informed, through corroborated stories of animal rescue volunteers of many unspoken tragedies that were suffered by the less fortunate animals at the local humane society. Notwithstanding the tireless endeavors and good intentions of the animal shelter, the fact remains that these facilities are unable to handle the increasingly heavy caseload of animals that are being rescued, abandoned or
relinquished every month - and unfortunately, the only option that many of these animals face is euthanasia.

After being made aware of the heartbreaking plight of these homeless animals, we feel
committed to do something to assist these no-kill animal rescue organizations, which are committed not only to educating the public about the issues of animal overpopulation, and offering of spay and neuter services to help address this problem, but also to finding foster or permanent homes for homeless animals, in lieu of euthanizing them. Our goal is to help defray some of their ongoing rescue-related costs: e.g., imminent medical care, food, sheltering, and follow-up vet visits (which include prescription costs).

Over the past few weeks, the media has given coverage to the heartbreaking plight of homeless animals – people are abandoning them left and right as they struggle to make ends meet.



The situation has become acute, and although taking measures to help
control the overpopulation of animals is important (through spay & neuter programs), our hearts lie with alleviating some of the current suffering of those animals already born that are unable to help themselves.

As a frequent donor to numerous charitable causes myself, I am sensitive to the fact that during this time of economic recession, it is most important to reach out and lend a hand to those less fortunate than myself, including the animals.
I myself own 4 former rescue dogs, Lindsey owns 2 former rescues and Amanda fosters animals from other No Kill Rescue Centers until they get adopted into their forever home.

Our last former “rescue”, who came to us, a very sweet, but timid guy, who rarely wagged his tail, and was too shy to display much affection. Now – “Sebastian” “referred to as “Mr. Wiggles” by some of his female fans) - is the estate’s ambassador of love, and a huge hit with our guests – especially the children.

It would be wonderful to offer a second chance at happiness to many more of these helpless animals who want nothing more but to be part of a loving home.

And so the dilemma begins.

We lease a 3 bedroom home on a very nice property…however the owner of the property will not give us permission to build kennels for the animals in the high kill facilities. And we are not in a position to buy a home as all of our extra income goes to care for these animals.

That is where you come in, we are graciously asking if you can donate a 3 bedroom mobile home and possibly a spot of land in the greater Savannah, GA area.
Either or is great, but if you could donate both we could get started allot faster in the building process.

Everything we receive is through donations, we don’t ask for cash donations in any way, shape or form. Materials for building the kennels, dog food Veterinarian vouchers for animals that need medical attention so on and so forth.

Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate cats and dogs that are on the high kill list for euthanasia, treating their illness if any and placing homeless animals into safe and loving homes, and not toward administrative costs.

Our family and dear friends “Lindsey Mlekush” & Amanda Hein have been donating food, time, medical supplies, under ground fencing, blankets , pillows, tarp everything you can imagine a helpless animal needs to numerous rescues throughout Georgia for quite sometime now. We are always looking for the best way we can help these helpless animals.

After some excited brainstorming we came up with the idea to open our own not for profit rescue. Hence the name “Kandi Boo Rescue” came about.

Please allow me to offer some background into what inspired us to open Kandi Boo Animal Rescue.

We were informed, through corroborated stories of animal rescue volunteers of many unspoken tragedies that were suffered by the less fortunate animals at the local humane society. Notwithstanding the tireless endeavors and good intentions of the animal shelter, the fact remains that these facilities are unable to handle the increasingly heavy caseload of animals that are being rescued, abandoned or
relinquished every month - and unfortunately, the only option that many of these animals face is euthanasia.

After being made aware of the heartbreaking plight of these homeless animals, we feel
committed to do something to assist these no-kill animal rescue organizations, which are committed not only to educating the public about the issues of animal overpopulation, and offering of spay and neuter services to help address this problem, but also to finding foster or permanent homes for homeless animals, in lieu of euthanizing them. Our goal is to help defray some of their ongoing rescue-related costs: e.g., imminent medical care, food, sheltering, and follow-up vet visits (which include prescription costs).

Over the past few weeks, the media has given coverage to the heartbreaking plight of homeless animals – people are abandoning them left and right as they struggle to make ends meet.



The situation has become acute, and although taking measures to help
control the overpopulation of animals is important (through spay & neuter programs), our hearts lie with alleviating some of the current suffering of those animals already born that are unable to help themselves.

As a frequent donor to numerous charitable causes myself, I am sensitive to the fact that during this time of economic recession, it is most important to reach out and lend a hand to those less fortunate than myself, including the animals.
I myself own 4 former rescue dogs, Lindsey owns 2 former rescues and Amanda fosters animals from other No Kill Rescue Centers until they get adopted into their forever home.

Our last former “rescue”, who came to us, a very sweet, but timid guy, who rarely wagged his tail, and was too shy to display much affection. Now – “Sebastian” “referred to as “Mr. Wiggles” by some of his female fans) - is the estate’s ambassador of love, and a huge hit with our guests – especially the children.

It would be wonderful to offer a second chance at happiness to many more of these helpless animals who want nothing more but to be part of a loving home.

And so the dilemma begins.

We lease a 3 bedroom home on a very nice property…however the owner of the property will not give us permission to build kennels for the animals in the high kill facilities. And we are not in a position to buy a home as all of our extra income goes to care for these animals.

That is where you come in, we are graciously asking if you can donate a 3 bedroom mobile home and possibly a spot of land in the greater Savannah, GA area.
Either or is great, but if you could donate both we could get started allot faster in the building process.

Everything we receive is through donations, we don’t ask for cash donations in any way, shape or form. Materials for building the kennels, dog food Veterinarian vouchers for animals that need medical attention so on and so forth.

Our family and dear friends “Lindsey Mlekush” & Amanda Hein have been donating food, time, medical supplies, under ground fencing, blankets , pillows, tarp everything you can imagine a helpless animal needs to numerous rescues throughout Georgia for quite sometime now. We are always looking for the best way we can help these helpless animals.

After some excited brainstorming we came up with the idea to open our own not for profit rescue. Hence the name “Kandi Boo Rescue” came about.

Please allow me to offer some background into what inspired us to open Kandi Boo Animal Rescue.

We were informed, through corroborated stories of animal rescue volunteers of many unspoken tragedies that were suffered by the less fortunate animals at the local humane society. Notwithstanding the tireless endeavors and good intentions of the animal shelter, the fact remains that these facilities are unable to handle the increasingly heavy caseload of animals that are being rescued, abandoned or
relinquished every month - and unfortunately, the only option that many of these animals face is euthanasia.

After being made aware of the heartbreaking plight of these homeless animals, we feel
committed to do something to assist these no-kill animal rescue organizations, which are committed not only to educating the public about the issues of animal overpopulation, and offering of spay and neuter services to help address this problem, but also to finding foster or permanent homes for homeless animals, in lieu of euthanizing them. Our goal is to help defray some of their ongoing rescue-related costs: e.g., imminent medical care, food, sheltering, and follow-up vet visits (which include prescription costs).

Over the past few weeks, the media has given coverage to the heartbreaking plight of homeless animals – people are abandoning them left and right as they struggle to make ends meet.



The situation has become acute, and although taking measures to help
control the overpopulation of animals is important (through spay & neuter programs), our hearts lie with alleviating some of the current suffering of those animals already born that are unable to help themselves.

As a frequent donor to numerous charitable causes myself, I am sensitive to the fact that during this time of economic recession, it is most important to reach out and lend a hand to those less fortunate than myself, including the animals.
I myself own 4 former rescue dogs, Lindsey owns 2 former rescues and Amanda fosters animals from other No Kill Rescue Centers until they get adopted into their forever home.

Our last former “rescue”, who came to us, a very sweet, but timid guy, who rarely wagged his tail, and was too shy to display much affection. Now – “Sebastian” “referred to as “Mr. Wiggles” by some of his female fans) - is the estate’s ambassador of love, and a huge hit with our guests – especially the children.

It would be wonderful to offer a second chance at happiness to many more of these helpless animals who want nothing more but to be part of a loving home.

And so the dilemma begins.

We lease a 3 bedroom home on a very nice property…however the owner of the property will not give us permission to build kennels for the animals in the high kill facilities. And we are not in a position to buy a home as all of our extra income goes to care for these animals.

That is where you come in, we are graciously asking if you can donate a 3 bedroom mobile home and possibly a spot of land in the greater Savannah, GA area.
Either or is great, but if you could donate both we could get started allot faster in the building process.

Everything we receive is through donations, we don’t ask for cash donations in any way, shape or form. Materials for building the kennels, dog food Veterinarian vouchers for animals that need medical attention so on and so forth.

I myself own 4 former rescue dogs, Lindsey owns 2 former rescues and Amanda fosters animals from other No Kill Rescue Centers until they get adopted into their forever home.

Our last former “rescue”, who came to us, a very sweet, but timid guy, who rarely wagged his tail, and was too shy to display much affection. Now – “Sebastian” “referred to as “Mr. Wiggles” by some of his female fans) - is the estate’s ambassador of love, and a huge hit with our guests – especially the children.

It would be wonderful to offer a second chance at happiness to many more of these helpless animals who want nothing more but to be part of a loving home.

And so the dilemma begins.

We lease a 3 bedroom home on a very nice property…however the owner of the property will not give us permission to build kennels for the animals in the high kill facilities. And we are not in a position to buy a home as all of our extra income goes to care for these animals.

That is where you come in, we are graciously asking if you can donate a 3 bedroom mobile home and possibly a spot of land in the greater Savannah, GA area.
Either or is great, but if you could donate both we could get started allot faster in the building process.

Everything we receive is through donations, we don’t ask for cash donations in any way, shape or form. Materials for building the kennels, dog food Veterinarian vouchers for animals that need medical attention so on and so forth.

Footnote:

We are the parents of a 15 year old son with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and we also have full custody of our 6 year old grandaughter who was born with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Once we are up and running with the rescue we plan to incorparate Autistic children as well as children with other handicaps into our program.


Twice a month we will have the children come to the rescue and spend time with the animals, these 2 issues are very near and dear to our entire family and community.

The Community Veterinarians who discount their services help CARE save many lives yet even then, the cost of surgery and post operative care adds up quickly.

Taking care of Rescued animals is something we do best.
We know because we do it and have surely passed the test.

The animals we bathed, the food we have fed, the vacuuming we have done, and all to watch a frightened soul, sit dreaming in the sun.

We know they understand this, for in their eyes we see the love that we have given them come shining back at us.

Some people think we are crazy, some others think we are great.
