Student in Tremendous debt due to student loans and medical bills
Posted by holymo on 2012-03-14 14:58:11
First let me begin by stating that if I were not in desperate need of help I would not go to such lengths to seek it out. As of right now I am currently a senior in college majoring in English. Last year, after taking prescribed antibiotics I did not need, I was diagnosed with a severe case of C.diff. At first, I did not recognize the symptoms as anything worth seeking medical attention for so I went on with life as a waitress awaiting the fall semester to begin. But my illness got the best of me and on the first day of class I found myself severely sick and was forced to run out of class to make it to the restroom. I sat in the stall and cried trying to understand why I was so sick for so long; I knew then that something was wrong. My mother insisted on taking me to the ER, once admitted they drew my blood and determined that I was indeed severely sick. My white blood cell count was over 40,000. They took x-rays, MRIs and Cat scans to determine the severity of my illness. While running the test they discovered a tumor on my liver, luckily it is begnine but I am suppose to have it checked every six months to ensure it won't become cancerous. Of course, this is not possible for me since I do not have insurance and as of right now I am tremendously in debt. My illness forced me to seek the help of a GI, unfortunately, they are ridiculously pricey and my bills have skyrocketed. I begged family and friends for financial assistance just to pay the minimum fee in order to be seen, but I have exhausted they kindness. My family has been great; they have helped me as much as they could even while they themselves do not have much. I was forced to quit my job because I was sick for well over six months. They too were kind enough to let me work when I could but it became too much trying to juggle school and work while sick. On top of my acquired medical bills I also am $40,000.00 in student debt. I am frightened by the amount of debt I have and am worried I will not land a job post-graduation soon enough to begin paying on them. I am proud of myself for sticking through school all while being sick. I am not bitter, the illness taught me many lessons that I will take with me forever. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I hope to someday pay all the kindness forward. Thank you for reading.
Blessing,
Mary

Well let me start at the begining, for the last 20 years I have worked for the same company and never had a days sickness, yes not one single day, in October 2011 I went to work one day and just quit felling I had just had enough, I did not tell them I was feeling depressed & suicidal and sick, I just said I no longer want to work here and I left that day.
As I was depressed and on the verge of killing myself, something I had actually felt for many years, I spent the next three days at home not washing, cleaning or speaking to anyone, I looked on the internet and searched "The best way to commit suicide" I was that low, I had no money and in fact had huge debts, to my friends and family I was always the strong one always the one person they could rely on,but reality was I was a broken man my spirit my soul was empty I wanted to die.
After those three days of no sleep and thoughts of how I would die I took a shower, whilst in the shower I just completely broke down I just lay on the floor in uncontrolable crying I just lay there for about an hour, and suddenly it came to me that I needed to speak to some one and quick.
Enter my Sister, since childhood my Sister has been like a mother to me(My own mother left when I was 3) she is truly a beautiful person a wonderful role model and just the most fantastic spirited person I know. Why I had not just told her how I felt at the start I just dont know, because we talk about everything, maybe its the depression and anxiety of it all, I dont know.
I called her in tears and told her I need her to come over, she was here within half an hour, we spent the day crying she more than me, I was kinda cried out, she had never seen me cry since I was probably ten years old, that is probably a sadness in itself.
She did everything for me in those early days, took me to my Doctors a Doctors I had not been to in 10 years, it had been that long that when we booked the appointment I was informed my Doctor died 4 years ago. Anyway I was put under a mental health program and prescribed Anti-depressants and also some sleeping tablets(these killed me my spirit and thoughts were numbed). my sister has been my Angel my saviour, there is no doubt in my mind I would be dead now if it was not for my sister, thinks are still bad, very bad at times, but I see my sister every day she comes around cooks, talks does coffee and is constantly on the phone(sometimes this does my head in) but I understand that she is scared that I may harm myself, she has come to the doctors and psychiatrist with my giving me huge support and a hand to hold that I needed, I cant tell you in words how special she is to me, I am not actually suicidal at the moment although I still think if I got a terminal illness this would be ideal, mad I know but I am being honest, I have huge debts and on sick benefit but this is not enough to live on or enough to pay debts. I actually owe £50,000 and I know this will never be paid so I will lose my home and everything else that goes with bankruptcy, but I will always have my sister their supporting me, she has helped me financially for three months but I dont want this to continue its wrong.
Well now to my BEG, well I dont want money for my debts I understand they are way too much to ever believe I can pay them back, no the reason I want help is because later this year my sister is 50 yes the big Five O and for the last three years she has been kinda planning what she will do and where she will go, she has decided that she wants to rent a Villa in Spain and have all her friends & family come for one week, when we discussed this last year obviuosly I was always included in this week, but I do not want her paying for me its Her birthday after all, I will not be able to pay my own way and I will not be working in the next few months as I am soon to under go councilling, the truth is I dont really want to go as I am actually feeling stressed about it all, hoping it goes away, but at the same time I understand how much it means to her to have me there, I know she wont take no for an answer and will want to pay for me.
All I ask is that if anyone on here could donate so I can at least pay some part in some way to my own way.She is not going until August or September and I think it will cost around £300 as a guess maybe slightly more.
If just a little from a lot of people then I can make some head way, or if you just want to mail me if you have similar problems as I have learned that talking problems through does help.
I know its a long beg but I want you to know the background.
Thanks for reading and hopefully you can help in some small way.

unbreak my heart....
Posted by brokenhearted on 2012-01-20 17:58:04
I'm raising funds for ICD replacement surgery, to go see a HOCM specialist (Dr. Craig Asher) at Cleveland Clinic in S. Florida and to have advanced testing through Vanderbilt Autonomic Center in Tennessee.
I don't want to admit I need help; I've always been a strong, independent person who took care of everything and everyone. In August 2009, my whole world changed. After my procedure, I applied for disability and was turned down twice and had to hire an attorney. I went from being "super" mom, wife & friend and care taker of an Autistic son to being the one who had to be taken care of.
So how did I get to the point I have to ask others for help? Shortly before Father's Day 2009, I fell and broke my foot. When it didn't heal, I went to my primary with a broken foot and came out with a broken heart. After the shock wore off from the doctor telling me that I was going to die if I didn't have valve surgery; I started asking questions.
I didn't quite believe him and thought he was over reacting when he told me I was going to die because I walked and ran 3-5 times weekly and even did strenuous yard work. I felt fine and have 4 children aged 9-26 and kept up with them and stayed very active in things they did; but I was a ticking time bomb just waiting for the right time for my heart to stop.
He sent me to several specialists who said I had nothing really wrong, just some mild valve problems associated with aging; which was a huge relief. Everything seemed normal except my EKG's; they showed I had a huge amount of PVC's (premature ventricular contractions) roughly 50,000 âextraâ heartbeats daily.
My heart didn't really beat fully; it only quivered like a bowl of jello day in day out. The problem with it beating like this is, the heart becomes very ineffective at pumping and your cardiac output drops and heart muscle damage can occur.
The cardiologist and electrophysiologist I saw did extensive testing and recommended more testing in the hospital. I went in for a sleep study, Tilt table test and EP Study with Ablation. The sleep study revealed I had moderately severe sleep apnea and my oxygen goes from 99% down to 73% at night making it very dangerous for me when I sleep.
The tilt table test was the first inkling that something dangerous was going on inside. I fainted and had no palpable pulse; which is a very rare thing to happen. I was diagnosed with Dysautonomia - Neurocardiogenic Syncope and Orthostatic Intolerance.
I then had an ablation to burn the extra pathways in my heart and get rid of the pvc's I was living with daily. I was told this would be a relatively easy process and given a 95% success rate to get rid of the extra beats completely but it never crossed my mind that anything would happen.
What preliminary tests failed to show, is the pattern and origin of my arrhythmias were in a very dangerous spot to ablate - the RV Apex â in the bottom thin underside of the heart.
During the EP Study, I went into cardiac arrest and my heart stopped completely with no rhythm they could shock (Asystole), some how it started again for a few minutes but then stopped again. They were able to shock me back to normal sinus rhythm and luckily, the third time it stopped; it restarted on it's own so I didn't have to be shocked again.
I was diagnosed with Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia; a very dangerous, life threatening arrhythmia. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days trying to find a cause and to be prepped for an ICD (implantable cardiac defibrillator).
It took a cardiac catherization to finally find the problem and to show I had HOCM (obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) and internal high pressures in my valves.
My regular EP had to go out of town after the first procedure, so his partner had to do the implant; he wasn't as skilled as my regular dr and botched the lead implants.
When they checked the leads the next day before releasing me, they found a problem with the lead placement but the dr said it was "ok" and sent me home. Since then, I've had nothing but problems with the unit and been told by several other EP's I need to have the leads replaced and the ICD could be causing part of my problems.
Doctors think my other problems are related to HOCM (obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) and Autonomic nervous system failure and when I faint, my heart stops briefly causing damage each time this happens.
After the procedure, my body started failing from the damage it sustained the 4 times my heart stopped. My original cardiologist told me I would be in a wheel chair and totally dependent on others for everything by the time I'm 50; which is daunting because in March I'll be 45 and I can't deny the facts - my body is failing.
I was put on 10,000g sodium daily, water/fluid loading, Midodrine (insurance won't cover it $312 - 30 day supply), Propanolol, Pantoprazole, pain meds, suppression hose and binders as well as having to stay supine the majority of the day - which caused my heart failure to worsen and my EF (ejection fraction) to go down.
Nothing the doctor's have tried has helped, I still faint and my heart stops on a daily basis and I never know from one day to the next if something is going to trigger fluid build up and I have an acute attack.
In June 2011 I fainted falling into the side of my tiled tub, lacerating the side of my head in the process, severely sprained my neck and suffered a concussion. After that episode, I became a bit more cautious with every move I make because the dr found declining neurological functioning and mild brain damage; he said any more falls could lead to permanent major brain damage.
With so many previous medical bills and co-pays, I can't afford the 20% co-insurance to have my ICD replaced and Mayo Clinic wants a $5,000 deposit up front even with insurance. My ICD alone is $125,000, leads another $30,000 and then there's the doctor and hospital fees; which I won't know the cost until the procedure is done.
Each heart rhythm specialist and cardiologist I see tell me there is nothing more they can do after going over my history and treatments; I have a long hard fight to go and I have to just be thankful each day I'm alive. Some days I'm really glad I made it through, other days when the problems and pain take over; I wish the dr's had let me die.
I developed PTSD after the procedure, panic disorder and extreme agoraphobia. I went into such a deep depression over my health issues, I was afraid I would never see the lighter side of things again. I finally went to see a psychologist who prescribed Lamictal and diagnosed me with Bi-Polar disorder which has helped greatly but I still struggle on a daily basis.
One day we were just the ânormalâ every day family and the toughest thing we had to deal with is a child with Autism. Then; our whole lives changed in an instant we were dealing with mounting medical bills, expensive prescriptions, tests, appointments, loss of income and dealing with the possibility of death on a daily basis.
You just never know what the day may bring, so keep those you love close to you and never take one second for granted.
From the bottom of my heart thank you - even if it's support to say hey; I'm here if you need to talk or I know how you're feeling.

Trying to start over

A Desperate Plea for HELP… Donations for Luxating Patella Surgery!
Posted by HOLLYPOOCH on 2011-12-08 19:58:02
I have a Service Dog named FiFi who is a Medical Alert Dog.
My Service Dog has been diagnosed with an extreme case of Severe Bilateral Medical Luxating Patella, confirmed by two separate veterinarians, who consider it to be a chronic and serious medical condition. The grooves in her femurs, where the kneecaps are supposed to ride, are very shallow and have caused her kneecaps to slip out of socket to the inside of the legs. Her kneecaps cannot be manipulated back into place by hand.
She has developed the condition bilaterally, on both sides, her condition is at a Grade 5 out of 5 in both hind knees, which is the most severe, and she needs surgery ASAP on both limbs.
The Luxating Patellas are causing constant pain and discomfort, decreased energy level, tiring quickly, bony protuberances, bowlegged, crouching stance, swollen knees and joints, poor coordination, loss of balance, limited mobility, stiffness when walking, a change in posture, lack of appetite, and arthritis pain.
When she is able to walk she does so with one of her hind legs further out from her body, while the other affected limb is always being carried because it is much too painful to use. For the most part, she must balance her weight on her front legs as she walks, while holding her hindquarters off the ground, which is severely uncomfortable to say the least. She is no longer able to walk, or even stand on her left hind leg, and is not able to move it.
The recommendation is for her to have corrective surgery on both knees within 2 weeks. The surgeon advised that, if left untreated, the condition will worsen and may lead to rupture of the cruciate ligament as well as painful deformation of the leg bones as she continues to grow. The surgery involves deepening the trochlear groove and modifying the joint capsule to prevent the kneecap from slipping out. If there is significant deformation of the leg bones, they will have to be cut, realigned and pinned. She will have approximately 8 weeks of recovery time.
As you can imagine, this surgery will not be cheap. The estimated cost (at a reduced price) is approx. $1,900 to $2,000, per leg, not including pre-op lab work, post-op rechecks, X-rays, narcotic pain medicine, a custom-built Wheelchair for Toy Breeds (to help her get around), plus miscellaneous other medical supplies that she will need after surgery. The Wheelchair (as prescribed by her Veterinarian) must be ordered online and costs $249.00+ Tax + Shipping and Handling charges).
If FiFi does not get the surgery she needs she will be forced to live a life of constant pain with a permanent luxation that could develop into degenerative joint changes, bone deformities of the femur and tibia, and may not be able to walk ever again!
Any donation that you can make towards FiFi's surgery would be greatly appreciated!
FiFi is an adorable Toy Pomeranian with a Sweet and Loving Disposition; a Sparkling Personality and Magical Charm. She is very clever, well-mannered, and is unusually calm and quiet. She is one smart dog!
She has brought so much Joy and Blessing into my life; I can't ever imagine life without her! Wherever I go, FiFi brings out the best in people. I know she brings out the best in me. I have formed a special bond with FiFi. She is not only my Service Dog; she is also my Best Friend and part of my Family.
My dog is a Service Dog, and she's paid her dues. It is a lot of money, but my dog deserves it. She's only 7 years old.
If it were for me, I would not ask for help.
But it's for FiFi!
Thank you all in advance for your donations, prayers and support!!
P.S. I can provide good personal and veterinary references to testify that I am a loving and responsible pet parent. I can also provide medical documentation from FiFiâs Veterinarian to verify her diagnosis and medical condition.

Definition of Luxating Patella:
(Luxated Patellas are a congenital (present at birth) condition. The actual luxation may not be present at birth, but the structural changes which lead to luxation are present. A Luxating Patella, or Patellar Luxation, is a condition that involves the dislocation of the knee cap, where it rotates to either the inside or the outside of the leg. A Luxating Patella can result from a traumatic injury or from a birth defect, but it is primarily passed down through ancestral genes).
Grade IV. The Patella cannot be replaced manually, and the leg is carried or used in a crouching position. Extension of the stifle is virtually impossible. Tibial rotation is quite severe, resulting in a "bow legged" appearance.
Logan's Heros

On February 18th, 2011 our son Logan (age 10) was diagnosed with a large brain tumor. He was not having many symptoms only occasional headaches. I was concerned that he may have been developing migraines and so I took him to see our family physician. His physical exam was normal including a rather thorough neurological exam. Dr. Arntz agreed with my initial thought and prescribed him some migraine medication. What a relief! He asked us to get a CT scan of Logan's head only as a precaution and he even stated that he didn't think there was any real concern, just a precaution. 5 days later, we were heading to the University of Michigan; Mott's childrens hospital because his precautionary CT scan had confirmed the worst for us. A 6 cm brain tumor in the posterior fossa of Logan's brain. Causing the cerebral spinal fluid to back up and create pressure in his head (hence the headaches).
Before leaving the house for the hospital we gave Logan a brief description of the problem, and explained to him that we didn't know what was going to happen next but we were going to the hospital to find out. You could see the worry on him but he was tough, shrugged his shoulders and said, "Well, I guess I better call it something, I think I'll name it Steve." So off we went, notifying family on the way to the hospital, and completely sick to my stomach.
Three days later we would embark on the scariest days of my life. Logan was promptly scheduled for surgery the following Monday and we were told there was a high probability that the tumor was cancerous. Dr. Cormac Maher performed 14 hours of brain surgery on Logan on Monday February 21st, and confirmed our fears that Logan indeed had a cancerous brain tumor called medulloblastoma. Then more bad news the post operative MRI showed that they had been able to remove all of the tumor and Logan would need more surgery. The next day he underwent another 6 hours of brain surgery. We caught it early but based on where the tumor sat he may not be able to talk or walk normally for 3-6 months. Lucky for us he talks and walks very well all things considered. But there has been radiation therapy and chemo therapy will continue until February or March of next year. There is a 75-80% chance of survivability, I feel blessed with those odds.
Logan is doing very well but this situation has put an incredible financial burden on us. I am falling behind on bills and need help. Andy is working constantly and I even started a second job on the weekends to try to help supplement the lost income from prescriptions, gas to and from the hospital, and just having to take time off work for appointments and Logan's sick days... I don't know what else to do. The banks have tried thankfully to work with us but our circumstance is not going to change for quite awhile longer. Our family's do not have a lot of money, and have already tried to help so much that I think it may be putting a strain on them as well. The church sends gas cards occasionally but there is just not enough to keep us going for the next year.
Here' s the kicker, Logan started his own Relay for Life team. I had taken him to a local expo about 3 weeks after he had been discharged from the hospital because I thought it would be good exercise for him to walk around and there would be lot's to look at, and there was a booth for the American Cancer Society. He walked up to the lady at the booth and he said " How old do you have to be to have a team?" She signed him up on the spot. Logan Bailey's Super Survivors have raised $8300.00 for the American Cancer Society! He's only a little more than $1600.00 away from his goal of raising $10000.00 for the Relay for Life. We've held auctions, bake sales, and concerts. It's been a wonderful distraction for him and he is super excited about reaching that fund-raising goal. We have asked our friends to contribute to his goals in lieu of giving us personal financial assistance. It's more important to me that his endeavors to do more for others, are successful.
We cannot change Logan's circumstance. He will always be a brain cancer survivor, and I will forever be a medullo-mom. But, if we can make this even minutely easier for others having to face it after us then we will do it. Logan donated "Steve the brain tumor" to medical research and he volunteered to participate in a medical research trial for his treatments. We hope that the money raised for the American Cancer Society will make a difference in research and support for anyone suffering with a cancer diagnosis. We hope that the research will make the work of wonderful, selfless, people like Dr. Maher and his team easier and more successful. If I had been diagnosed with this same type of cancer at the age of ten it would have been a terminal diagnosis... the research is working!!
I need help, I need financial help for my family so that we can stop the worrying over finances and concentrate on bringing our entire family through this successfully looking at it in a positive light and remembering that we did it with hearts full of love and with others in mind. Logan is a truly remarkable child and I am so proud of him. I anxiously await your response Thank you for your consideration.

Stuck on couch, 3 children, no insurance, need surgery.

I have a college degree and have been looking for a job for 2 years, but because I have been a stay at home mom, home schooling my dyslexic son, the workforce seems to believe I am not qualified for even entry level positions. I have taken a job cleaning houses for $10.00 and hour. The little bit of extra money I am making is helping with everyday needs such as groceries and gas, but it does not go far. In addition to working part time, I am responsible for three children, my son, and my niece and nephew who live with us. I am also watching my neighbors little girls in the afternoons for some extra cash.
My immediate concern is that I injured my back in March of 2010. I have ruptured a disk which is sitting on the nerve to my leg causing excruciating pain. I was doing very well and was almost better until last week when I injured my back again, worse than the first time. I am unable to work my job or to watch the girls and now we have lost what little money I did make. I now have to have surgery, it is no longer an option, but because we are short on money and run our own business, we do not have any health insurance.
The hospital wants $5600.00 up front, the surgeon, $1600.00 and the testing for pre operation adds up to about $550.00. I can cover the $550.00 but as for the rest of itâ¦
I have been tough for as long as I can, trying to avoid the surgery, but at this point the only way I can function is to take a lot of prescribed narcotics which then prevents me from driving.
I hope that someone out there could have some compassion for my situation and offer some help to me. The children are suffering and missing activities, my husband is stressed from working and taking care of my responsibilities, and I am feeling sad and useless.
My husband and I are constantly helping others who are less fortunate than us (i.e. my niece and nephew), but this time we need the help and only hope someone can reciprocate the favor. Thank you in advance for considering to help and I wish you well in all your endeavors.
Sick of being sick, any help appreciated.

Since the diagnosis and through this long, strange trip, I lost my home and career, was institutionalized on two occasions, mutilated myself several times, suffered seizures when unable to pay for my medication, and have had several friends and love interests wash their hands of me, either out of dread or the social stigma associated with my condition.
Of course, I realize everyone has problems and financial worries are a large stress factor in many people's lives, however, I value my mental health foremost of my personal concerns, and would be grateful to anyone willing to help me as I continue my battle with this demon, which hopefully I can defeat and get back to living as a normal, functional person.
Thank you for reading, any help, and God bless.

severe rare allergic reaction almost killed me.

Whenever I get sick, I usually just deal with it because as like others-I can't afford health insurance. I ended up with and infection that only antibiotics would cure. I went to a walk-in clinic who prescribed me an antibiotic. I had no idea I was allergic to the sulfa based drugs and after taking it for 9 days-that night I started feeling like I had hives on my back. The next day was fathers day and by that afternoon my whole body was being covered from head to toe by these red and purple spots ( also none as thrombocytopenia)and they were starting to come into my eye and my gums started bleeding. This put everyone around me including my kids in a slight panic.
Long story short- I went to a local hospital where I figured I could get a shot for the reaction-but it turns out it was so serious that I was life-flighted to a different hospital because my platelet count had dropped to 1000 (it should normally be 150,000 to 450,000) and my hemoglobin had completely been destroyed and I was bleeding to death. I remained in the hospital for over a week and am now left with bills totally over 100,000 between the 2 hospitals-the life flight- the 10 different specialists that were called in to see me and everything else.
I really really need some help to pay off these bills. I will be in debt for the rest of my life trying to pay off these bills. Thank you for reading my story and thank you to anyone who can help. heather
