Almost homeless college graduate and mother

Posted by tori1974 on 2012-04-17 17:58:18

Dear Reader
I graduated college but the jobs aren’t calling. I am a mother and have now incurred student loans of $12,312 not including the accruing interest for which I cannot pay back because I am not employed. I am not above working even low wage jobs at this point but I have been turned down by those employers claiming that I am overqualified. All of my savings are used up and I will soon lose my apartment. I really need help so please consider donating I will be forever thankful.

Unemployed and Rent's Due

Posted by akhlut on 2012-04-02 10:58:46

I was in a masters program, but I couldn't juggle schoolwork and raising my son at the same time, so I withdrew due to my grades. That was back in December, so I was able to pay off January's rent. I filed my taxes as soon as I got my W2s and got my tax refund, which I used to pay my car payment in advance (as I was behind on that for several months), my past due bills, and rent for two months. I thought I'd get some employment, but I'm either horrifically overqualified for most entry-level work(2 bachelor's degrees) or a bit too underqualified for nearly everything else. The sweet spot for jobs that I'm qualified for aren't here where I live.

And I've called private charities, talked with the government, and asked friends and family. The charities are all underfunded, the government gives way too little to pay rent with, and my friends and family are living from paycheck-to-paycheck and can't swing enough my way to pay rent.

I just want enough to keep a roof over my son's and wife's heads until I can get some gainful employment.

Need help with Rent and Bills

Posted by carol6457 on 2012-02-12 20:58:20

I worked in the Oil and Gas industry for 9 years and I was laid off due to the economy. I was able to receive unemployment which has now run out. I have applied at temp agencies, fast food chains, casinos, bars, gas stations and anything that runs in the paper and online in my area (except for truck driving and Dr. positions) since I am not qualified to do either. I have been out of work for 7 months and still have not received a job yet with the reasons being told that I am either overqualified, under qualified, or there aren't any openings at this time they are just accepting applications. I am receiving food stamps and my children are receiving medicaid but neither food stamps or medicaid help pay my rent, utilities, car insurance or any of the other bills that we have. I am not sure what else to do at this point but to keep looking everyday and hope I find a job soon. Anything would help and be greatly appreciated

Please Help a Graduate Pay Her $275,000 Student Loans

Posted by Tiffcat on 2011-10-10 18:58:49

Dear Reader:
I am currently an unemployed law school graduate who has over $275,000 in student loans to pay (college, law school, and bar study loans combined). I went to school with the goal of increasing my ability to earn a good living but I cannot find a job to save my life. I have been rejected from retail and restaurant jobs because I'm overqualified while being rejected from law firms because I am under qualified. I am now sinking into a deep state of depression over the fact that the tiny bit of savings I have left in the bank to pay my bills is rapidly shrinking as each month passes. School should not cost so much, especially if there is little promise for employment following graduation.

Unlike the average person who could use a little extra cash for something, I am nearing complete homelessness. My struggle is not with credit card debt but with educational debt and the fact that I'm unemployed and cannot convince any employer to hire me. Without an income and bills mounting, I will end up on the street by January. With little hope left, I issue this beg for help.

Indiana mom needs something but cant put finger on it

I don't think having fun spending money I don't have is good. How can I? I'm unemployed. I'm a single college educated mother of two that can't get a job. I am either overqualified, not enough experience in my field, What I want is not a donation, not fun, I want good fortune in getting a job, but what is the fun in that if none are coming my way? There is a 10.3% increase in the unemployment rate in my county right now. Why? They would rather hire high school kids that don't care about job stability, insurance, hours, etc, because they want to have their fun! My kids hate me because all the fun I do for them is either take them to the park, or we watch free movies online. If there would ever be a chance of me winning the lottery or a sweepstakes for a free vacation or whatever, that would be so nice and fun! Now that's entertaintment! Donations!?!

Volunteer Fireman Needs Your Help

Posted by mwmfireman on 2011-07-10 11:58:48

Hello. I am a volunteer Fireman with 5 years of service to my community. In the last six months, my wife was let go from her job of 10 years. We now rely on my income and benefits to keep us afloat. We have been struggling to maintain what we have. We have car payments, bills, mortgage, insurance, teenagers, etc. My wife has been on multiple interviews with no luck in 6 months. It is always the same in the end, "you really are overqualified for this position". We took out a loan on my 401k which has been used up; plus I had a retirement account from a previous employer that we also had to use. In a nutshell, our safety net is now gone. It amazes me that we went from having what we need to a stressful struggle to keep it. From this date forward, everything will fall behind. We have cut costs where possible, but it is a small measure against a rising tide that we cannot hold back. I am desperate for help and have swallowed my pride to make this move. I am not looking to get out of debt, just help to get us through until my wife can land a job. Can you help? Please? I have no monetary goal, anything that I post comes across sounding greedy and I don't want to leave that impression. They say desperate times call for desperate measures. My family needs help and we are hopeful that enough people will rally to our cause. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

End of our Rope

Posted by lynn on 2011-07-06 14:58:30

Last year was a disaster for our family and we have now exhausted every possible resource and emptied our savings just to stay in our home. Two family members lost our jobs due to downsizing, and have been unable to find employment because with college educations we are "overqualified" for the McDonald's jobs. We are three grown children living in my mother's home and trying to contribute anything we can to the bills. She is working full time while also attending grad school, and her income simply isn't enough. She also has a young teen still at home. She loves sharing her home with us, but we have lost the ability to contribute.

At this time we have sold a few things on Craigslist in order to prevent our water being shut off tomorrow, but I have a car payment due (I need the car to look for jobs), and we have no way to pay the mortgage next month unless we allow the electricity and phones to be shut off. Any amount would be a blessing which would be combined with the occasional $20 we are able to earn by offering tutoring and music lessons now and then. Thank you so much for anything you can do.
I am a single mom of 2. I survived cervical cancer in 2009..I was in 4th stage when I had surgery. I was in management for 20 years and relocated to a new state for a new job last year. In June of last year, I lost my job when the new job closed their office where i moved to! I have 2 small children and have not been able to find a job for almost a year(It will be a full year in 7 days) I was offered a good job but in order to take it we would have to move to another state and I dont have any way to do so. Right now I cant even afford to buy the kids clothes or shoes, much less be able to move. This is a definite job offer made to me by a former employer...I need help to be able to get there and rent a house. After adding things up, I believe it will be roughly $300 for gas to move..and rent on an apt will be around $500 and a deposit of $250. Lights and water are included in rent. If anyone can help me PLEASE do! I am at a loss for what to do..I know my kids and I can not survive any longer where we are now..No income..No family or friends for support(including emotional support)..we are isolated here and this is scary. The total we need to be able to move and so that I can finally go back to work after a year is going to be right at $1050.00...I have submitted at least 50 resumes per week for a year..have only been called in for 3 interviews...have been told 9 times that I am overqualified for positions..I would have scrubbed toilets to provide for my kids but no one seems to want to give me a chance since I was in management for so long...PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN!! I just dont know what to do anymore! Savings were exausted in Nov of last year..I have had to go on public assistance..and that didnt pay bills or even rent so I had to move us into a subsidized apt..which is scary..and I cant let my kids even play outside because I myself am scared of the neighborhood...we really need some help here. The job I have been offered is managing a restaurant for a former employer..It is a guaranteed position if I can just get there!!

Quickly losing the battle to keep a roof over my families heads

Posted by Nuitari1974 on 2011-06-01 03:58:15

I was layed off from my job of 6 years in 2005 due to budget cuts. In order to keep up with bills while I looked for a new job I started a computer repair business that managed to keep us afloat for a couple years, along with tapping my 401k. During this time the local economy took and even bigger hit and even with over a decade of experience I was unable to find sufficient work without a degree. As a result I decided to go back to school in 2009 to get my degree. With fiancial aid, the remainder of my 401k, money from the odd jobs I could find, and my wifes wages we managed to stay just ahead of our bills.

However in the last year the economy has gotten so bad that I was actually losing money repairing and building custom PC's, my wifes hours have been cut wo less than 10 hours a week, and any job that I have applied for I am not eligble for either because I am still finishing my degree so am under qualified, or because I am over qualified due to the schooling I have completed so far. (That's right I have been told I am overqualified to flip burgers at Mcdonalds, not sure how that works.)

Because of our reduced income we have been late on a number of bill payments for utilities and the house. I have sold my boat, my guns, and various electronics to get were we are and am to the point I have nothing of value left to sell. Aside from the monthly bills I have repair bills racking up on the house and our remaining vehicle.

The to top it off we got hit with a flood that took out our water heater, washer and dryer, and did significant damage to the rest of the basement.

Current bills include:
Cable $185
Cell $195
Mortgage $850
porperty taxes $200
food $600
gas $250
misc expenses for kids $200+ (8 year old daughter, 17 year old son)

repairs
replace water heater $1200
replace washer and dryer $500
engine and transmission work needed $2400
replace flooring and wall paneling $7500

Current monthly income
Wife: $600
Me: $800

Even with the financial aid and some other assistance we are almost $600 a month short just for the basic bills.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Veteran Senior Citizens Facing Foreclosure

Posted by boots on 2011-04-11 16:58:21

God bless you for taking the time to read my plea. My husband and I are in our 60's and worked all of our lives, but I lost my full time job 3 years ago when the company closed it's doors and cannot find full time work. We have always been honest and hardworking people. It is harder to find a job when you are older and I have applied for everything I could possibly qualify for, often being told I am overqualified. The truth is that businesses are run by and prefer to hire younger people. I would even work for minimum wage just to have a job. My husband can only find part-time work. He is a Vietnam Veteran currently being screened for Agent Orange illnesses and cannot work full time anymore. He has Gout, Chrohn's Disease, High Blood Pressure, skin cancer and bad knees. I am diabetic and have epilepsy.

We have exhausted our savings trying to hang on and keep our home, but need help to pay off our mortgage and debts. We need about $200,000 to keep our home and another $30,000 to get out of debt.

We would be so grateful for your help and will happily pay it forward when I have the chance. I used to enjoy helping others and almost always would stop and buy a meal for a needy person when I was out shopping and miss the joy of being able to do that. I have been in touch with every agency and person I can think of and tried every other option without luck.

I am so scared. The stress we have been under is not helping our health. We never thought we would be in a position like this, but no one does. If you can help us, we would be so grateful.

The wolf is at the door, will you help us please!

Pregnant, unemployed, and broke! Anything will help.

Hello -

I'm pregnant with my first child. I'm 28 years old, I have my bachelor's of science degree but was laid off last year and have not been able to find a job since. Ive applied various locations but am either overqualified or under-qualified at every job I've applied for. I recently found out I am expecting, which I am very excited about, but in reality I am so broke I can hardly scrape up money for food let alone pay my bills. If I had just myself to worry about I would find a way to tough it out, but I am worried all the stress Im under is negatively effecting my baby. Any amount, no matter how small, will help my situation, Thank you in advance to anyone that is able to help.

just money to move

I lost my business in Hurricane Katrina. (if interested, I can document)have been struggling to rebuild my life ever since. Have move to DC and got laid off there. Moved to Richmond, Va. was diagnosed with PTSD and Major depression...was laid off. All money gone. I have job offers back in New Orleans and would like to return. I am simply asking for $2000 to help relocate. My money is gone, I have been trying in futility to find work...overqualified/underqualified. I am only seeking the chance to try again.
God bless you all.
