My name is Jason. I am a hardworking 28 year old married man with three wonderful children 7, 4, and 1 month old, and the best wife anyone could ever ask for. When I and my wife married we were “given” my parents’ home in NY along with the mortgage as a wedding present. My wife and I have spent the last three years renovating this home, dumping every single cent we had into its improvement. We both come from broken homes and both wanted something more than what we came from, and have managed to build a loving stress free environment for our family, and in a matter of a month my “family” (brother, mother and father) have managed to crush our dream out of selfishness and this, “the world owes me something” mentality they all seem to have.
I work full time and also do side jobs on weekends to make ends meet, my wife has been out of work on disability (she will return full time in the next 3 weeks) due to the birth of our son, which should be the happiest time of our life, and yet I get to go home and see my children upset wondering why there uncle is acting the way he is, I get to see my wife cry over the fact that we have been basically reminded that even though we pay the bill and we fix this home and have made it what it never was for me growing up an actual home, that it is not ours and we should have no say over what happens.
My brother who at one time made hundreds of thousands of dollars a year an selfish heartless drug addict, who even though has never treated me or my family with any respect I have always dropped what I am doing regardless of time or place to go “save him”, and by save usually picking his drug addict ass up and making sure he gets home, or dropping what I’m doing to take him to the hospital cause he is so sick from whatever he has taken this time. Now that brother has decided to move in with us, not ask, not offer to help, but blatantly tell me and my wife, “it’s not your house , I am not asking permission to stay here”, and my parents who told me this home was a “Wedding gift” seem to agree. They feel it’s okay for a drug addict to be living among children, that it’s okay that slowly one by one pieces of my wife’s jewelry are disappearing, or that since he came has literally taken over my infant sons nursery with his disgusting belongings that I found my wife sitting on the floor of the living room trying to feed the baby because he’s asleep on the sofa passed out cold and his belonging are strewn all over the house.
My only options are to buy this home that I and my wife have built a great life in so I can say who stays and goes, or to uproot my children and move as far from these selfish disgusting people as possible.
In order to purchase this home I would need a deposit upwards of 12000 which due to me draining my accounts my sons accounts and my wife’s to “save” my brother from jail, drug dealers, etc., we have nothing left. Which has led me here, led me to the point where I feel more dependent on asking strangers for help than my own family because they can’t even help themselves? I am the little brother (youngest of four) who has always had to be the big brother, I am the one one whose entire family drops there problems in my lap as if to say deal with it. I have been the pillar supporting every single family member I have for the last 28 years, the pillar has finally cracked and can’t hold up the weight of the world anymore. I am begging on my hands and knees for help from completer strangers so I can continue to give my children the life I never had, and offer them some stability instead of having to tear them from the home they have come to love, that my wife has come to love, that I love. I saved up enough money for school but now it turns out I don't have money for living expenses. I get a work permit in November 2012, but by then I won't have any money for next year. The expenses for each of the two years is $17,000, and I saved up just for one year. I need help in making ends meet. I have been looking for work on campus and it's not working out since I was told to wait until August and September for cleaning jobs and restaurant jobs at the school. All the tutoring jobs I have applied for on campus have not materialized so far.

If I do not finish this school, it is over for me. I spent many years in the US in school since 2001, and it resulted in nothing because they didn't give me a work permit, and they did not allow me to stay.I got two bachelors degrees from there but since I did not have citizenship or a green card, I had to leave.

If I finish school here in Canada, I will get a three year work permit, and I can finally be useful to myself and my family. I need to pay back money that I owe my uncle for paying for my primary and secondary education back home in the third world. I need to educate, or at least pay for my niece and nephew who are orphaned to go to college. I need to take care of my sick mother, I have been unable to do that so far because I had to pay for my education in the US out of pocket.

I have other on going problems such as loss of sight in one eye but then that is something to be dealt with when I finally finish school, it is not as urgent as getting the money to pay for school. No matter how badly everything else is going, even with my mom being sick and my being unable to send her money for treatment, school comes first even though ideally it should not be that way.

I have been involved in community service for many years. I worked with DC Habitat for Humanity on a house construction project. I also worked with refugees from 2010 to 2011 before I had to leave the US, I was tutoring English through International Rescue Committee. I am currently working with the Food Bank where I am, and over summer since I will have no on campus jobs, I plan on getting more volunteer jobs so I can give back to the community. Canada has given me so much, a chance at self improvement, so it's only natural that I want to say thank you to this great country.

I am not scared of working, infact when I was in the US I worked full time while going to school full time. I do not want to violate the student visa here in Canada because Canada is a kind country for immigrants and they will definitely give me the work permit come November 2012, as long as I do not work illegally before then.

I am planning to move out of my homestay right now and rent with schoolmates in order to minimize my expenses. I do not usually even eat things like meat, milk, eggs, all of which I do not like or I am allergic to. So I do know how to save money. I learned to live on very little while in the US so I need money to pay for my education so that I can maintain my student visa.

Please help, my family cannot afford to pay for my education, I do not have citizenship from a developed country to qualify for financial aid or scholarships, the scholarships from back home are mostly for those doing masters degrees and PhDs, I'm doing an associates degree right now. They also insist that you must not have already left the country before they give you the scholarship. I will be applying for scholarships in the schoool, and also some bursary from my government which might be only $500, and that is only if I can get someone back home to bribe someone in the Ministry of Education to get that bursary.

I have tried all ways to improve my life for many years, and this time education truly will be a key to improving my life. I am not a stranger to subjecting myself to medical experiments in order to earn more money to pay for school. I need help this time around, this is my last try at improving my future. Going back home will be a disaster since I do not have tall relatives (people with influence) to get me jobs. When I purchased this home back in 2004 after finally getting away from an extremely abusive marriage, all I could see was that the price was right and that I would finally be safe - hundreds of miles away from my now ex-husband. As a single mother of 3 children on a limited income, I saw how I would be able to live completely mortgage and rent free. I didn't however see the major repairs that this house required - nor did I have the money to make such repairs. Over time, of course things got worse - and it brings me up to the point of where I am today.

The roof on this house is so badly deteriorated that it is leaking very badly in the downstairs bathroom, dining room, kitchen and front door areas. It has leaked so badly that now mold has started to form in the bathroom ceiling and the drywall has slowly been falling away on the one wall. The slightest wind and you will find shingles blown off and laying on the ground. The roof is so bad that I am fearful that even the boards underneath the shingles may need to be replaced.

Realize that this is my last resort in trying to come up with the funds required to get this new roof. I have tried applying to government grants for home improvement but unfortunately I do not qualify because 1. my property taxes are not paid up to date (I owe approximately $2000 just in property taxes), and 2. the size of the house is larger than the specified guideline parameters. Nor do I qualify for a loan of any sort as 1. I make a mere $200 a month working and 2. have bad past credit (being a single mom has taken some serious tolls on me - including financially!).

So the goal here is to get a new roof installed - and as soon as possible so that any further damage to the house is avoided. I also worry about the mold forming in the bathroom especially and one day the roof caving in in there. While my children have grown to teenagers now, I still have to worry about their health.

I have uploaded pictures and this story at Chip-In to show you the extent of the damage done especially in the bathroom area - and a view of the shingles as they are right now on the roof. Admittedly I realize that my house also needs some repair on the stucco, windows and such but right now my main concern is the roof. I'm surprised it hasn't caved in on me by now.
