Trapped in a homeless shelter
Posted by Lost_in_KY on 2012-05-12 10:58:50
I'm about to be 51 years old and never thought I'd do something like this, but here goes.
I am disabled from a car wreck with a semi, among other conditions. I was on disability for 15 years, but lost it almost 5 years ago because the guy I roomed with was always gone and was supposed to take me to my doctor and Social Security review appointments. Then he got us thrown out of the apartment because he had hoarded his paychecks, was living off my money, and wasn't paying the rent or bills. He left me with a $1600 light bill ! I didn't find out any of this until we were evicted.
I have been homeless ever since, for nearly 5 years, bounced around from place to place, unable to stay in one place long enough to get thru the Social Security application process - I had to start all over again. In 2010, I spent 8 month living in a closet in Columbus, OH and starved.
I had a Social Security hearing in Lexington, KY last August and was dropped off at a horrible homeless shelter in Lexington, to stay until my hearing, when I was assured by a 'free' lawyer I'd get my disability back. I didn't and now I've been trapped in this gulag for more than 10 months, among druggies, alcholics, and ex-cons dumped off here by the police and the Dept. of Corrections. The building is infested wih bedbugs and there is black mold everywhere, which caused me to have an inner ear infection that finally blew a hole in my eardrum since I couldn't get treated for it. Men sleep on the floors and the bathroom is a chamber of horrors. I've had food poisoning 4 times and a couple months ago, more than 40 men sought treatment for food poisoning. The nurse who reported the cases to the Health Dept suddenly left, while the cook remains at work. A Veteran's Admin rep said he wouldn't give the food served here to his dog.
I'm trapped here because Kentucky discriminates against men in that it will not give us Medicaid cards unless we're already on Social Security. This prevents me from having a family doctor and care for my disabilities, which I need in order to win back my benefits. Under these conditions, I will never be able to get out of this nightmare.
I have a friend in Florida who wants me to come down there. FL will give me a Medicaid card and I could at least have a fighting chance to win my disability back. As I've said; I was on it for 15 years and was repeatedly approved every 2 years during the case reviews. I need to get out of this awful state if this nightmare is ever to end. I've lost almost 11 months of my life being warehoused in a place that's one step above prison, and I've done nothing wrong to deserve this. Yet I'm subject to the same rules and restrictions as the ex-cons who live on the floors above me.
I have no family left to fall back on, so all I can do is ask for help. I need money to get to FL so I can get a doctor and my disabillity back, and have a life again. It will cost around $500 to get my things shipped to Orlando, and another $200 to get me there. Then I'd need somewhere to stay until I can get thru the Social Security process again. After that, I'd be OK.
Thank you for reading all this any any help offered would change my life. I would do everything I could to help other homeless men so as to give back help given me when I most needed it.

Help where the government FAILS
Posted by yerkess on 2012-02-01 13:58:39
Hi I am a student studying fulltime at college working towards a degree in admin/office tech, currently I live with my partner in a local authority rented flat. The government decided that £3995 was how much our household was entitled to claim and that was mostly a student loan and small bursary. We have applied for many other grants and been refused. We are now in debt with our rent, gas and currently feel like we are both going hungry too much. The government are more than happy to pay for anything for you if you are a heroin addict or alcoholic or have 6 children but someone who wants to better themselves by studying to earn a living has very little help. Its no wonder the uk is in such a state with unemployment when people are encouraged to become mothers to get benefits and houses, or encouraged to be a junkie. PLEASE if anyone out there can help in any way please donate and help me to stay in education and get the career I deserve.

Hello!I never done anything like in my life before, but let's try this.I am 26 years old male who is broke and have awful job.All I want in my life is to finish college (computer science) and to work as network and systems admin.I have no money for that.I do not suffer for big money , but with this pay I receive now I will not be able to make a small house of my own in a 30 years.I need to work whole my life to earn $150k.And that kind of money is enough to build me a small house, buy a car, start and finish college, and startup my own bussiness.I don't want to do that with 70 years.I'm looking for someone to give me a job in IT and pay me school at least...or donate 1 dollar. If 150k people donate 1 dollar each my life is everything I want it to be.What is 1 dollar?
College Grad in Physics Needs a Job
Posted by gwumpkie on 2011-08-19 14:58:38
I have been unemployed for 2 years with a degree in physics, astrophysics, and math, and almost 100k in student loan debt which is defaulting on me now. I would love to stop teetering on the edge of homelessness and be able to pay off my loans and take care of my family. To do this I need a job! I have teaching experience (3 years in a planetarium, years of tutoring, lab setup, assistant teaching, substitute teacher K-12, and STEM outreach). I am also a skilled researcher and hard worker. I am great at customer service, worked as an admin assistant for several years, as a park ranger/conservation assistant, a salesperson, and even a belly dance teacher. I am talented, motivated, and I want to work. If you have a job for me, please help! Prefer Idaho jobs, but at this point I'm desperate.

Help the Nochi family - Iwaki Japan (March 2011 Quake and Tsunami)
Posted by ireshaimase on 2011-03-17 02:58:39
As you are aware. The Earthquake that struck recently affected alot of people, including one of my very close friends, Masumi Nochi.
Her and her family, thank god, are fine. But her house is not. I have started a fund for her through my paypal account.
I will post the progress of this on my Facebook. And of course, I am sending this message to EVERYONE of my friends on Facebook. This money will go, through me, straight to Masumi Nochi in Iwaki, Japan, where I too lived for three years of my life. This is ONE way we can help her out. I will make sure she gets all the money that is put into the account. No admin fees, nothing like that.
Thank you so much.
I have a video that she and I did together in 2002 - here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4637486953292517187#

It has been 2 years since graduation, I've only had temp work and I'm now destitute and at the end of my rope.

I'm past disillusioned. Friends and family always say "It will get better." I'm so sick of hearing that. After sending out easily THOUSANDS of resumes and only having a handful of interviews (that I'm fairly certain I rocked), I have nothing to show for my life. Unable to pay rent or bills, parents no longer able to help. All I do with my life is work odd jobs and apply for work. It's so disheartening. Networking and nepotism seems to be the only way to get a job these days, even if you excelled at a great school like I did.
I hate that it's come to begging for money. I just. Want. To. Work. I'm in LA and am looking to find work somewhere on the business side of the entertainment industry. My BS is in Econ w/ a focus in Entertainment. My background is in PR, Social Media, and as an Admin/Exec Assistant. (Resume available if you need it.) If any of you know anyone that needs an employee, I'll forever be in your debt. Seriously. I'll send you a birthday card for the rest of your life.
Thanks for reading this. I hate to have to come here and ask but I just have nowhere else to turn. It took some pride swallowing, but at this point, I don't have much pride left so it wasn't difficult.
Anything you can give is appreciated

Carolyn and Don are great people. Please help, even if it's just a little.
Posted by sterfin on 2011-02-27 10:58:16
She was a nationally certified paralegal and he was an IT Admin for a fortune 500 company. One day in early 2008, Carolyn had a seizure at work and was takin to the emergency room. They called Don at work and he went straight there. They were informed that she had a gioblastoma, a brain tumor. Don lost his job in mid-2008; he suspects it was because of the mounting healthcare costs his employer was incurring because of his wife's illness. They had to use their modest retirement savings to maintain medical coverage that soon ran out but fortunately Carolyn recovered. Fast forward 2 years. After undergoing surgery, radiation and chemo, Carolyn is now doing well. Although she can't work anymore, she collects a small SS disability claim. Don does odd jobs fixing computers and making handmade jewelry, which he sells at the local flea market.
I know this because Carolyn called me crying. I thought long and hard before posting this, but I had to. Carolyn and Don are my parents.
Please, please help them, even if its a small amount.
Thank You.

In need of help to progress with career
Posted by greatcareer on 2011-01-23 05:58:58
I'll keep this short.
I'm in my twenties and work in admin with quite a big company; unfortunately I'm not qualified enough to progress any further within the company. Over the past two years I have lost a much wanted baby, lost my job, lost my flat, ran up £12,000 worth of debt, and been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
I got back on track, moved home with my parents and got a new job.
But I want to make myself better - I want to wipe out my debts, and start a degree in Business Management with the Open University. I'm not eligible for funding, and my family are unable to help me pay for it; they're as skint as I am!
So if you can help in any way, big or small, it would be appreciated a LOT more than you know.
As soon as I am qualified and have my finances in order, I will be making a donation to SANDS, as a thank you to the help they gave me, and a thank you to anyone who may help me out as a result of this website.
Thanks so much.

23 year old Raising $800 to become Independant!
Posted by Tissue on 2010-07-30 02:58:58
Hi, I'm Chris, I am 23, an employed college student & I live in southern California.
I am currently living in the Irvine area w/my family. My family is poor to the point of being destitute. I literally do not eat breakfast or lunch since we either do not have food or the food is of such low quality it will make me physically ill to eat it. I buy & only drink distilled water from a local market because it is the only clean source of water available due to contaminants in the public water system as well as the public water is mostly unfiltered reclaimed runoff water.
Educationally I am currently a student that wishes to study culinary arts but is forced to learn networking protocols due to lack of funding. Culinary schools are a specialty school which require a lot of money to attend. I am training for my CCNA+Linux Admin Certs at a local community college.
My first job was to a physician doing medical claims billing part time. This position had me mostly behind a terminal looking at a blinking monitor keeping track of patient records. Starting $8/hr end 9.50/hr. After leaving due to hours being cutback I got a temp job for a company collecting on medical leins. That didn't work out, so a couple months later got a job as a part of the Technical services dept at UCI medical center. Due to having a personal falling out with my parents at the time I was supposed to be hired, I was kicked out. Unable to go to the interview without a car I missed the opportunity until several months later when the position was needed to be filled again. At this point the project that the position was for had already been completed & the final checks were being done. The position only lasted 3 weeks. $15/hr for doing desktop support @ UCI medical center.
After working at UCI a "friend" of mine whom I've known since freshman year of high school told me he could get me a job at his work. Of course after several months of hearing nothing back I realize its just more of the So-cal area bullshit I am so used to.
Since then I have been hired as a model. The agency is setup so that the company accepts models which the models pay into a certain amount ($30) for the service of being sent information on potential upcoming modeling jobs(underwear ads, online catalog modeling etc).
Throughout all of this I've never made enough money to live independently from family financial support due to the unreasonably high cost of living in this area. $800 - $1200 to rent an APARTMENT. $500 - $900 to rent a SINGLE ROOM, NO GUESTS/GF. This amount may or many not include utilities.
The point of the post is to get help. Help by getting donations to help me start a home business in the style of the cottage industry. I have a small business opportunity I could start with $800-$1000 investment that would start me off on the path to independence. Through this I would be selling a specialized product which should net me an income of 3k per month which would allow me to reinvest into the business & provide me with financial independence until I am able to attend a nice Culinary University.
My dream is to be able to attend a nice cooking school & learn to be a skilled Chef.

Sometimes we are too proud to ask for help. I am hoping this story will strike a chord with someone who may have started with a struggle, was helped and now wants to pay it forward. My husband and I moved to a small rural community to escape the ratrace of big city life, took a risk at starting our own business with zero working capital. May not have been the smartest move but we thought with hard work we could make it happen. And happen it did until life started throwing curve balls at us. We converted our dairy barn into an auto repair shop. I work the admin of the business and 40 hours a week to try to keep up on the personal bills. In June my husband broke his leg in five places and was unable to work for close to three months, that and the failing economy almost bankrupted us. We were able to borrow enough money from family to purchase a semi and trailor, trying to diversify and keep money coming in. We are now facing enormous amounts of debt.
My husband has been on the road for close to a month and we are still struggling.
I know if someone will help us out of this mess. WE will pay it forward as well.
Our most immediate needs are insurance to keep the truck on the road and mortgage payment, significantly behind on.
My husband is proud, hard working and never takes the path of least resistance when it comes to doing the right things. We believe that a man is only as good as his word. If this reaches anyone, I hope that it reaches someone that understands the plight of the small business owner and the desire to live the American Dream.
God Bless.
